Alex (Jordan Alden) was a fat kid, and for that alone the targets of
bullies in his school. He was also a gentle soul and mostly just let it
slide - until the bullying got to a point that something snapped, and Alex
killed his bullies in a gruesome manner, wearing a cheap pig mask. He was
arrested and sent to an insane asylum, where for years he refused to speak
- until one day he was just up and gone. Urban kegend has him settled in a
region of the woods near his hometown, where he every now and again kills
tourists, hikers, hunters, or whoever he feels intrudes his territory.
Legend also has it that he wears a mask made of real pig skin and goes by
the name of Hogman (William Instone).
Alex has escaped the asylum 20 years ago and since, 28 people have gone
missing in "his" neck of the woods, and yet his story has never
become big news in the serialkiller-crazed USA. But then film student
Roger (Michael Fischer) stumbles upon the story, and he and his associates
Nicole (Paige Steakley) and Derick (Johnny Huang) decide to make a
documentary about the subject for a film school assignment, and for a bit
of fun on the side, they bring along their friends (Samantha Holland,
Kayla Anderson, Dakota Millett, Santiago Sky) for some after hours
partying. Now in Alex's hometown they get some interesting interviews,
from the mother (Brinke Stevens) of a victim to one of Alex's former
orderlies (Bill Johnson) to a creepy antique store owner (Bill Oberst jr),
before the local sheriff (Paul T. Taylor) pretty much tells them off - but
they find no actual evidence whether the urban legend about the Hogman has
a grain of truth to it or not - until of course, the Hogman shows up on
their doorstep, intent to make a killing or three ...
Now sure, Butchers Bluff doesn't exactly re-invent the slasher
genre, but it has all the genre's elements in all the right places, from
suspense scenes to jump scares, from macabre details to all-out gruesome
killings, and the framing story about the hapless film students actually
gives the proceedings some more depth, especially since it presents us
with a bunch of fleshed-out characters that are more than just mere cannon
fodder. So in all, this of course might not be a film for everybody, it's
steeped too deeply in its genre for that, but at the same time it's pretty
cool horror entertainment.
