Mal Cooper (Theo Rossi), a disgraced cop turned bounty hunter, is to
bring in Jake Gordon (Shane Paul McGhie), key witness in a trial against
cop killer Beaumont (Anthony 'Treach' Criss), who has gotten cold feet and
now tries to skip country. For a bounty hunter of Cooper's caliber it's no
problem to track down Gordon, but it turns out to be much harder to
convince him to come back with him, especially since Gordon carries a bag
full of money with him. But when an attempt on Gordon's life is made and
Cooper shoots it out with the assassin, Gordon begins to understand that
Cooper is on his side. During their drive into town, Cooper and Gordon run
into many an ambush, as apparently somebody has put out an open hit on
Gordon, but Cooper sure isn't one to let his guard down. But then he
receives news that let his heart sink: Turns out Cooper isn't witness of
the prosecution but of the defense, as he's a witness that it wasn't
Beaumont who killed two cops but another cop - a cop from Cooper's former
precinct. Now that's doubly troubling for Cooper, as for one many of his
friends still work at the precinct, and since one of the few people who
know about his whereabouts is his former colleague Hatch (Sufe Bradshaw),
there must be a leak somewhere in the precinct - which will make bringing
Gordon back to town and to the court all the more difficult ... Veterans
Dermot Mulroney and Kim Coates play the chief of police and Cooper's
sleazy boss, respectively. In story this is certainly a
throwback to buddy action comedies from the 1980s, as it's packed with all
the right ingredients. In execution however, The Getback feels very
fresh, a very well executed B-movie that doesn't tryo to overreach in
ambition but tells its story in a swift way, is fast enough paced to keep
the audience on the edges of their seats, features some well-executed
setpieces, and even finds its heart in some of the quieter scenes without
distracting from the main story. And a solid cast carry everything rather
beautifully, making this pretty cool action entertainment.
