Having just been thrown out of her apartment by her flatmates (Leah
Wentworth, Melinda Cestaro) and having nowhere else to go, young Madison
(Anna Shields) decides to tag along with her best friend Gemma (Jessy
Holtermann) and Gemma's friends Talia (Kaitlyn Lunardi), Alice (Ameerah
Briggs) and Laura (Brianna Cala) on a hike through the Canadian mounrains,
without knowing what the actual objective of the hike was - and that
objective was to find the Barren House, a haunted house deep in the woods
that apparently nobody has ever returned from and that's probably only an
urban legend. However, on their first night out in the wilderness, the
girls get into a massive storm that seems to blow them all into different
direction, but Madison seems to be the lucky one: While her leg's gravely
injured, she makes it to a cabin where she's not only safe from any kind
of winds but also finds some creature comforts to at least make it to the
night. The next morning she tries to find her friends and make it back to
civilisation, but other than Alice's twisted corpse she finds little and
in the evening ends up at the cabin again. Eventually though she's joined
by Talia, who appears to be relatively unscathed by it all, and at first
the girls can rely on one another in their honest effort to remain alive
and eventually make it out of here. But then Talia starts acting weirder
and weirder, from having fed Madison Alison's flesh without her knowing to
a tendency for self harming to ultimately torturing Madison. But if that's
bad, what's even more worrying is that Madison's not even sure she can
trust her own perception anymore ...
Now The North Witch is certainly not a film for the
faint of heart - and it's not so much what the film's showing, as in that
respect while not holding back it doesn't go the extra mile, but what it's
implicating, and when it comes to the psychological underpinnings of self
harm, psycho-torture and the like, The North Witch is nothing short
of disturbing., both in writing and execution. Adding to this is a
well-structured storyline about a fallible yet relatable fleshed-out
character, a directorial approach that knows when to hold back and when to
go all out, and a powerhouse performance by Anna Shields leading a solid
cast, and ultimately you've got a pretty cool genre ride.
