René Wiesner certainly isn't a filmmaker for everyone, his films are
too full of violence and macabre details coupled with some often
uncomfortable insights and uneasy relatabilities. And even the violence in
his movies is at times real if always consensual. And Reflexion is
a movie of Wiesner meditating on his own body of work, knowing it's not a
crowd pleaser, but then again it never was intended as one - on which the
director wants to distance himself from indie cinema that, while not able
to compete with mainstream cinema, still tries to find a whatever niche
audience, and place his oeuvre firmly in the underground, where films are
not made for any viewership anymore but just because certain movies need
to get made, due to the filmmaker's urge to make them, and people watching
them is a sort of bonus but not an incentive for the filmmaker himself. ...
and I think in this, René Wiesner rather aptly describes his cinema and
his approach to filmmaking - but what he humbly leaves out though is that
he is able to deliver very fascinating cinematic landscapes to those who
do watch his movies, that the pain he goes through as a creative
translates onto the screen rather mesmerizingly, and his cinematic
journeys, including this one, reach further than just his own private echo
chamber. Now sure, Wiesner's films are as far as from commercial cinema as
one could get, but especially for that, they, and again, Reflexion,
which is as much a behind-the.-scenes look as another cinematic venture,
included, are very worthwhile pieces of art.
