Christina (Christina Karagianni) has never really come over the fact
that her boyfriend Yorgos (Iraklis Savvopoulos), who works in a morgue, has left her - among other
things because of hallucinations she's having. For months she terrorizes
him ... while her hallucinations terrorize her, to the point where she
kills herself because of them. But were they really just hallucinations? These
days, Yorgos lives together with lovely Nefeli (Nefeli Papaioannou) ...
who for some reason is jealous of Christina - though she and Yorgos are
both unaware that she's already dead. Then Nefeli starts having
hallucinations, quite similar in style to Christina's - dead people show
up out of nowhere and often threaten or try to kill her or tell her to
kill Yorgos -, and now she's
afraid to tell Yorgos, fearing he would leave her like he left Christina,
but scared shitless nevertheless. Nefeli starts to investigate in order
to conquer her fears and finds out that Christina is dead, but also that
she has been dabbling in witchcraft and has cursed all woman who fall in
love with Yorgos. This information is all the more unsettling when one
considers one of Nefeli's friends (Rahel Kapsaski) who was (not so) secretly in love with
Yorgos has died a freakish death. Finally, Nefeli finds the courage to
confide into Yorgos, but apart from telling her to see a psychiatrist, he
seems to evade the whole story, especially when she tells him the
"ghosts" that haunt her are actually dead people he has treated
at the morgue he works at. When Nefeli one day is so freaked out by the
visions she's having she rushes to see Yorgos in the morgue, she catches
him with someone else ... Click here to open the Spoiler
Pop-up! Soul Looting is a
film that ably demonstrates how good low-to-no budget indie horror can
really be: Though the story of the film might for the first two thirds not be the most original,
it's compellingly and intelligently told, the film invariably favours
atmosphere over spectacle and restraint over excess, and this way manages
to create something creepy in a refreshingly old-fashioned way. And that
said, the key plottwist towards the end of the movie really puts a
shocking spin to it that will stay with you for quite some time, yet a
spin that seems to have grown out of the story quite naturally. In all,
a really nice ghoststory that should not be missed!
