Nancy Evans (Carole Landis) not only runs a highly successful circus,
she also owns a ranch in Mesquite she has never been to. But when she
receives an offer to sell the ranch for $1,000, she turns it down for the
ranch's sentimental value - after all it has been left to her by her
grandpa. Shortly after that, accidents start to happen, accident that
before long run her circus into the ground. She now probably could save
herself at least by selling the ranch, but instead she decides to move to
the ranch with those closest to her - much to the dismay of her manager
George, who's part of an organisation to get their hands on the ranch as
they could sell the land for $75,000 for its rich watter supplies. Wanting
to take charge of her ranch, Nancy runs into the three Mesquiteers - Stony
Brooke (John Wayne), Tucson Smith (Ray Crash Corrigan) and Lullaby Joslin
(Max Terhune) - who live on the ranch next door which Nancy initially
mistakes for hers. The Mesquiteers soon notice there's something fishy
going on when Nancy's ranch is attacked, and persuade her to mortgage her
ranch to gather enough money to put up a show at the town's fair - but
that goes horribly wrong when Lullaby loses the deed to Mike Abbott (John
Merton), who's secretly in league with George, and somehow everything
eventually makes Nancy suspect the Mesquiteers of trying to trick her out
of her ranch. The Mesquiteers then collect evidence against George, but
having no way to prove his guilt to Nancy, they have to steal her circus
horse in order to win a trotting race in order to save her ranch. They
fail though on a massive scale, but the local sheriff (Roscoe Ates) is a
decent fellow and sees the good in them, so he lets them and Nancy's horse
escape to both win the race and bring the real baddies of the piece to
justice. The circus scenes at the beginning of this film were lifted
from the 1937 production Circus Girl (John H. Auer). Now
in terms of trivia, Three Texas Star is most certainly a special
episode since Ray Crash Corrigan plays not only his regular role of Tucson
Smith but also as Nancy's gorilla. It's somewhat disappointing then though
that the gorilla's only in it for a few laughs and carries nothing of the
actual plot. That point of critique out of the way, this is actually quite
an entertaining entry into the Three Mesquiteers-series, as
it balances out the action rather well with bits of comedy and gets nice
splashes of colour from the circus background. And Carole Landis makes a
good female lead, ably supported by Collette Lyons as her second in
command and Billy Curtis as diminuitive strongman. Now sure, this is no
classic, maybe not even one of the best in the series, but good
entertainment still.
