After the death of her father (James Clinton), Sky (Dawn Hamil) gathers
her husband Cecil (Ty Anthony Smith) and her brother Gray (Joseph Bishop)
to drive over to his forest lodge to scatter his edges according to his
will and take care of some loose ends. Sounds like a simple enough task,
only once at the lodge, the long forgotten family history comes up again,
causing Gray to fall physically sick before long. Also, Sky has to find
out that her dad was into some weird paranormal shit, and even if she's
not exactly a believer by any stretch of imagination, what she finds
worries her. And if that's not enough, a forest ranger (Steven Marlow) is
roaming the area, making unnanounced visits ever so often. And while
that's at first merely annoying, it soon becomes apparent he's part of a
grander scheme - and that scheme's driven by evil ... While
firmly rooted in the genre, When a Stranger Knocks is by no means
your run-of-the-mill horror flick, it's approach is deliberately slowburn
and relying on atmosphere, with its black-and-white imagery coming across
as almost lyrical. Totally in line with that, the film doesn't spell
everything out, relies more on mood than action, to a point where things
get abstract at times. That all said, when things do come to a head, the
film also features some pretty exciting and well-staged fight sceens. And
a small but very competent ensemble cast playing some interesting
characters really bring the film to life, making this a rather unique but
rather awesome genre experience.
