For years, Jessica (Sophe Ash) and her daughter Beth (Mia) have been on
the run from mythical masked brute Thorn (Lewis Cooper) - until Jessica
decides to return to her hometown Avondale and take the fight to Thorn and
his acolytes. However, even there she and Beth aren't safe from the
brute and company, and soon loses her foster mother in their fight against
them. But Jessica has brought a squad of reinforcements (Gareth Tidball,
William Marshall, Mariana Gkila) who keep their adversaries at bay - a
squad that's quickly thinned out, and it's only thanks to Jessica's real
mother Eve Kathryn Oliver) that she and Beth stay alive. Thing is,
Jessica's mother has remained in Thorn's parallel world for decades to
keep him at bay following a blood oath between Thorn and the city of
Avondale that concerns her and Jessica's bloodline. And that she has come
back to save Jessica and Beth now was not exactly out of motherly love but
to see that Beth is sacrificed to keep Avondale thriving ...
Wrath of Thorn veers away from the Thorn-series'
slasher roots rather considerably and has by now transformed into a blend
of folk horror and horror action, based on a rather detailed
mythology - and Wrath of Thorn pulls this change in direction off
rather beautifully, combining atmosphere-heavy storytelling with
well-executed action setpieces, all smoothly directed and well paced, and
carried by a very competent cast, all of which makes this ultimately a
pure joy to watch - well, at least if you're into horror cinema.
