Phil (Peter Dinklage) is an underpaid college professor who basically just wants one thing, his own mansion - something he can't afford by long. Then though, his realtor friend Dell (Matt Dillon) sets him up with Astrid (Shirley MacLaine), an elderly woman with a mansion she's willing to sell for a steal, the only condition being he can only live in the tiny apartment under the roof until she dies. This apartment under the roof sucks of course, but for Phil this deal is still a chance in a lifetime. Thing is, after he has moved in he discovers Astrid isn't nearly as sickly as she first appeared to be, she has a daughter, Maggie (Kimberly Quinn), who happens to be a lawyer and who's not willing to give up her mother's mansion to Phil after her mother's deadh - and she has the legal experience to contest Phil's contract with her mother. And then every time Astrid has an accident that could kill her, Phil's around and is just too decent a human being not to save her. But the longer this situation prevails the more desperate Phil becomes ...

Danny Glover plays a private eye with a knack for photographing people having sex.

Peter Dinklage has made many an over-the-top comedy over the years - but American Dreamer isn't one of them, it's a quieter movie that's more interested in driving its story forward than landing punchline (even if it has got its fair share), and that shows lots of heart in the process, And even though it meanders a little, narratively, it's never dull - also thanks of course to a first rate cast playing well fleshed out characters. And this all results in a movie that's well worth a watch.

American Dreamer will be released for digital download in the UK on March 17th, 2025.
