Of late, being a highwayman doesn't really pay for Dick Turpin (Richard
O'Sullivan) and his sidekick Swiftnick (Michael Deeks) anymore as there's
someone in Turpin's neck of the woods who robs hapless travellers before
he can. Turpin soon is sure who the villain is, too, Vizard (Michael
O'Hagan), an a bit too quiet stranger who has been hanging out at Big
Nell's (Joan Rhodes) place of late ... and Turpin couldn't be more wrong
as Vizard's actually a spy for Turpin's arch enemy Captain Spiker (David
Daker) - and yet, Vizard is not after Turpin but after the
"poacher", the man stealing Turpin's business. To lure the
poacher out, Turpin decides to set a trap and befriends effeminate and
obviously rich Willoughby (Rupert Frazer), a relation of Turpin's other
arch enemy, Sir John (Christopher Benjamin) - and then Swiftnick finds out
Willoughby is actually the poacher. Upon being found out, Willoughby is
quick to admit he has fallen on hard times back in London and has taken to
stealing, but far from wanting to be Turpin's competition, he suggests a
way for them all to rob Sir John's considerable fortune, a plan as simple
as it's dangerous ... Now at times this episode goes a bit too
over-the-top for laughs - but actually it's really hilarious, with both
Richard O'Sullivan and Rupert Frazer playing up the campy side of things.
Now of course, that makes this episode less adventure and more comedy, but
that sure works out rather nicely.
