Ace (Hoot Gibson) returns to his hometown after years of absence, only
to learn that his mentor, Mason (Gordon De Main) has been killed, and to
find the killer, he pays a visit to Mason's ranch, now run by his daughter
Betty (Gloria Shea), posing as a mildmannered and cowardly drifter, with
only his friend, the ranch's foreman Skeeter (Skeeter Bill Robbins)
knowing his true identity. To find Mason's killer, Ace repeatedly dresses
up as the Dude Bandit, called so because he's unusually
well-dressed for a cowboy, and spoils the plans of one Burton (Hooper
Atchley) to take over ranches in the neighbourhood in a half-legal way. Of
course, Burton is really the killer of Mason, of course, given time, Ace
can find plenty of proof against him and bring him to justice, and of
course, in the end, he gets the girl, Betty, too, even though she has
previously shown nothing but contempt for the cowardly drifter. Despite
the premise of this movie - a mild-mannered cowboy by day turns into a
fancy bandit by night - seems to be tailormade for a cowboyactor like Hoot
Gibson, whose comic talent easily surpassed his qualities as an acion hero
-, The Dude Bandit as such is one of his weaker efforts, especially
since he wasn't allowed to take his mild-mannered-guy role to the hilts
and doesn't camp up his tough hombre role enough. A bit of a
disappointment.
