The marriage of Albie (Timothy Haug) and Penny (Christie Griffin) has
seen better days - the romance is pretty much out of it, and that she has
given up her acting career to become a stay-at-home mum isn't really
helping much, or that he's an unsuccessful writer who has problems getting
things done. But tonight they have left the kids (Blake Eli, Anabelle
Crivelli) to go out together and hopefully patch things up. And the
evening goes fine until they return home and find two strangers (Miles
Taber, Julianne Ruck) in their house, who claim it's theirs and refuse to
leave. Albie calls the police repeatedly, but they refuse to help,
especially since the strange man turns out to be a cop. They visit Penny's
sister Kimmy (Whitney Reade) for abode, but she flat out refuses to let
them spends the night but suggests to sneak into their own house to
collect evidence against the strangers to armed with this pretty much
force the police to help. They do, but are captured by the strangers, tied
up and questioned - only their questions about how to access humankinds
hive mind don't make any sense, yet failure to answer results in severe
pain. And it more and more turns out that these strangers might not even
be from this world ...
The Hive is a rather weird and wonderful movie, weird
because its blend of home invasion story, science fiction and dramedy
about a troubled coupleoften takes unexpected turns and not always makes
sense right away, but wonderful because this blend absolutely works, the
very diverse genre elements actually work in combination. And a smooth
directorial effort, a strong cast playing rather colourful characters, and
good chemistry and dynamic between these characters make thig one a very
entertaining watch.
