A Screambox exclusive: Lizzie (Megan Oestertreich) has died a
mere three days ago, much to the distress of her sister Bethany (Lianne
O'Shea), to whom Lizzie was headed when she lost control of her car - or
had she actually given up control of her car in an effort to kill herself?
Anyways, Bethany has since found a place to bring the dead back to life,
somewhere deep in the woods, in a ritual that can only be performed during
summer solstice - in other words, today. However, she can't drag Lizzie's
body to that place on her own, as its a 7 miles walk trhought the woods,
so she asks Lizzie's boyfriend Eli (Omar Maskati) to assist her. Now Eli
doesn't believe in bringing the dead back to life one bit - but with her
having left the land of the living just like that he needs closure, so he
agrees to come. And off the two are through the woods, but carrying a
corpse mile upon mile through the woods isn't exactly a walk through the
park, plus the very down-to-.earth Eli and the conspiracy theorist Bethany
have to realize during their excursion that they don't really see eye to
eye on a lot of things, and it's really only their shared love to Lizzie
that doesn't make them abandon one another in the middle of the woods.
Plus, carrying a corpse, one doesn't want to be caught by either other
people or wild animals - so it's quite an adventerous walk to begin with,
without either of them knowing what will await them at their destination
... A very unusual film for sure, basically because it mostly
just focuses on two people carrying a corpse and talking - and that works
quite so well because the dialogue is poignant, the characters are well
fleshed out and both in their special ways relatable, and the situations
they get themselves into along the way are actually pretty exhilarating -
without just trying to drive a point home. And on top of that the film
finds the perfect combination of comedy and drama, so the black humour of
the piece feels quite grounded while the tragic situations never shift
into full tearjerker mode. And a pair of strong leads of course bring this
film to life rather nicely, helping to make it a pretty cool piece of
genre cinema.
