After years in the Royal Army, PTSD-plagued Tommy (Jamie B. Chambers)
returns to his coastal hometown - to find it overrun by drugs. He also
meets his ex again, Sally (Eloise Lovell Anderson) - but she doesn't want
to have anything to do with him anymore, not since he left her overnight
to go to war. Sally's now part of Bagman's (Jon Campling) touring group of
Morris dancers - which is of course a cover, as her group are a group of
vigilantes fighting drug violence wherever they're called to. And it just
happens that they've been called back here to trace down missing Kirsty
(Lauren Scott-Berry), who was last seen with drug kingpin Frank (Ross
O'Hennessy). And while tracking her down, Bagman and company, all highly
trained martial artists, take out as many of Frank's men as they can ...
until they almost lose a battle against Frank's muscle-packed chef ('Tiny'
Iron), and if it wasn't for Tommy, a well-trained fighter himself from his
army days, Sally and a few others might have ended up dead. And since one
of their ranks (Shah Hussain) has been hospitalized, Bagman's happy to
invite Tommy into their fold. Now Tommy's happy to fight for a good cause,
and a time everything goes great - but then Frank grows wise to the
organisation, has Bagman killed, and then has Tommy and Sally taken
hostage at Bagman's funeral to challenge the organisation in open fight
...
Now I will admit to it, when it comes to mere storytelling, Morris
Men is a bit jumpy, and especially in the first half hour or so is
confusing rather than anything else. And weirdly enough, that confusion is
mirrored in some unnecessarily shaky camerawork throughout. That said
though, Morris Men is still a movie that's well worth a watch, it
moves at a very brisk pace, features many an exciting action scene, and
the idea of a group of vigilantes posing as Morris dancers is almost
ingenious. And that the ensemble cast is very relatable and well able to
carry the story only helps making this one a pretty entertaining ride.
