When old man Enderby (Finlay Currie) is found dead by Miss Marple
(Margaret Rutherford) & Mister Stringer (Stringer Davis), police
inspector Craddock (Charles 'Bud' Tingwell) refuses in her theory of
murder by fear of cats, causing her to take up investigations herself,
& she soon has a second murder at her hands, that of Enderby's
sister Cora. Deducting that everything has to do wih old man Enderby's
inheritance, she decides to take up accommodations in Hector Enderby's
(Robert Morley) riding hotel, where the rest of the family - George
Crossfield (Robert Urquhart), Rosamund Shane (Katya Douglas) & her
husband Michael (James Villiers) - are also staying, as well as timid
Miss Milchrest (Flora Robson), Cora's lady's companion for many
years. Of course everybody acts suspicious, including rude stable boy
Hillman (Duncan Lamont), but soon all clues point at Crossfield as
the murderer - until he is killed too, that is. Then Miss Marple devices
a sinister plan, faking a heart-attack while dancing the twist (really)
& having herself laid off to rest in a remote room of the hotel to
lure the killer out into the open ... & the killer is - Miss
Milchrest, not so timid after all, having killed off old man Enderby
just so that everybody thinks it is a crime in the family about his
inheritance, while she actually wanted to get her hands on an extremely
valuable paintng in Cora's possession. Of course she falls into Miss
Marple's trap in the end, while Hector Enderby falls into a very
different kind of trap & proposes to Miss Marple, which she
declines. Though this movie is repeating the exact same
formula of its predecessor Murder,
she said & has even less to do with Agatha Christie's novel
it is based on, it is still a highly entertaining murder mystery, thanks
in large parts again to Margaret Rutherford's eccentric portrayal of the
elderly amateur sleuth, greatly complimented by the equally eccentric
Robert Morley in a supporting role & a generally enjoyable cast.
