On their way through the universe, the crew of the Red Dwarf - the
last human Lister (Craig Charles), the after-death hologram Rimmer
(Chris Barrie), the robot Kryten (Robert Llewellyn), the cat evolved to
human form Cat (Danny John-Jules) & the halfwit computer Holly
(Hatty Hayridge) - discover an UFO, & aboard of it, a DNA
transmogrifier. & after Cat has accidently turned Lister into a
chicken & into a hamster temporarily, Kryten is turned into a real
human being. At first, he is thrilled by that but soon sees the
downsides (his eyes are not equipped with zoom lenses & his nipples
cannot receive FM-radio) & wants to become a robot again. But before
they dare to use the transmogrifier on Kryten again, they try it on
Lister's lunch, mutton vindaloo - which turns into a horrible monster,
chasing them through the ship. To fight it, Lister comes up with the
idea to have himself transmogrified into a superhuman - but comes out of
the process only 1 foot tall. However, when he accidently pushes over a
can of beer, that kills the monster (resulting in the best line of the
episode - "Lager ... the only thing that can kill a
vindaloo."). Though some funny ideas are thrown into
that episode, as a whole it makes little sense, since the storyline
repeatedly loses direction, only to often start a whole different
narration altogether (not at all helped ba the fact that some ideas that
also turned up in the season 3 episode Polymorph
are reused here). The biggest point of critique though is the treatment
of the Lister-character, that was originally supposed to be the
careless, sloppy counterpart to the uptight Rimmer, but works as a voice
of reason & the only responsible crewmember here - this making him
incredibly unfunny. |
