An alien shapeshifter (actually a genetically engineered ultimate
warrior from earth) that feeds on negative emotions enters the Red
Dwarf, first disguised as a ball, but then taking on numerous disguises
(including Lister's [Craig Charles] underpants) before revealing itself
as the big & slimey alien it actually is - & as such sucking out
Lister's fear, turning him into a careless & annoying macho-hero.
The rest of the (being Rimmer [Chris Barrie], Cat [Danny John-Jules]
& robot Kryten [Robert Llewellyn]) go down to cargo bay to hunt the
alien down, but it gets to each of themin a clever disguise, sucking out
their respective negative emotions: Disguised as a woman, it sucks out
Cat's vanity, turning him into a hopeless drunk, disguised as Rimmer it
sucks out Kryten's guilt, turning him into a ... well, asshole, & as
Rimmer's mother it sucks out Rimmer's anger, turning him into - of all
things - a pacifist. Discussing the situation as their other selves,
the four decide to hunt down the alien & kill it - even though
Rimmer suggests a leaflet campaign -, which they do in a surprisingly
underwhelming finale. Part Alien-parody, part
character comedy, with all the characters playing their opposites (even
though it's at best questionable if Rimmer's strongest character-trait
was his anger while Lister's was his cowardice), which doesn't work all
that well for 2 reasons: First the adventure part doesn't really take
off (with the finale when the alien is suddenly killed by 2 missiles
just emphasizing on this fact), second, the actors are not terribly
convincing as their own counterparts - with the possible exception of
Chris Barrie as pacifist who not only handles the comical aspects of the
role well but also has the funniest lines. Later - in season 6 of the
series - the plot of this episode would be recycled in the inferior Emohawk
- Polymorph II.
