Our quintet of heroes - Lister (Craig Charles), Rimmer (Chris Barrie),
Kryten (Robert Llewellyn), Kachanski (Chloe Annett) and Cat (Danny
John-Jules) - break out of prison, and they want to steal a shuttle to
leave Red Dwarf for good ... when they discover a shape shifting alien
virus has entered the ship and is gradually eating it up. They figure if
they report it, they might be rehabilitated, which is even better than
being on the run ... but Red dwarf's Captain hollister decides to evacuate
the Red Dwarf, and because there are not enough shuttles to evacuate
everybody, our heroes are left behind - smeg.
So they figure to fight the virus they have to go into an alternate
universe where everything is opposite, to find the exact opposite of the
virus to find it. However, only Rimmer makes it to the other universe,
where he finds himself to be captain of the ship, with Cat being the
science officer and Kachanski a dumb blonde. Ultimately, Rimmer gets the
formula for the anti-virus ... but when he comes back to his own universe,
he finds his mates have gone off to another parallel universe, and the
ship is falling apart but fast.. And as if that wasn't enough, the formula
somehow catches fire and the Grim Reaper (Ed Bye) comes to fetch Rimmer
... only to be kicked in the groin.
The end.
Unfortunately, this really was the end of the series Red Dwarf
- though it wasn't intended to be, and even now (early 2006) several
projects, like a series of specials, a spin-off movie, or another season,
are in varius stages of discussion.
As a last episode though, Only the Good ... is a bit of a
disappointment. The story seems grossly underdeveloped, and the ending
just lacks any real impact. Possibly the worst episode of season 8, but
still there are some nice gags, and it - like most of Red Dwarf's
season 8 - is mre centered on character than on telling a lame-assed
sci-fi story - which is of course good news if you have such great
characters as Lister and Rimmer.
