Jackie (Jomri D.) seems like a well-to-do-man, doing well enough at
least to hire someone, rent-a-man Dillon (Jakub Baranski) to accompany him
on a hike through the desert he says he does to keep his blood pressure
down. That said, Dillon is not the best of companies, he's got no
conversational skills and mostly gives short answers, his favourite being
"I don't know," and he seems to have built a wall around himself
to not let anyone in, least of all his clients. Not that Jackie would care
in the least though it seems, as he just rambles on and on about his own
philosophy, which involves a lot of board game analogies, while leading
Dillon further and further out into the desert. And then, once miles away
from civilisation, Jackie pulls a gun and points it at Dillon ... Now
on the surface, there's plenty wrong with Rent-a-Man: The
camerawork seems a bit erratic and sometimes just wanders off, the editing
doesn't always conform with broadly accepted cinematic conventions, the
acting's a bit on the wooden side and the script is too dialogue-heavy -
and all of these are things that make the charm of Rent-a-Man and
seem like purely intentional "flaws". Fact is, because the film
is made like it is, it manages to lure one into its own rabbit hole, give
one a feeling of its very own world - also helped of course by the very
beautiful but other-worldly desert settings. Of course, one has to be
open-minded for a rather eccentric experience, but if so, one's up for a
fascinating trip for sure. If this has at all gotten you
