Back in 2016, when Donald Trump first became president, he on at least
one occasion claimed to be the least racist person in the USA - without
even bothering to show a hint of a proof to substantiate that claim. In
the eyes of many, he has actually made an effort to make racism acceptible
again, like in the eyes of journalists Sista Tells It Like It Is (Ambre
Anderson), Sista Wanna B. Free (Yvette Lashawn Williams) and Sista Truth
(Imani Logan) who have split away from mainstream media to start their own
channel Black News, and who, despite only being a local channel,
try to make a change on the national level by uncovering systemic racism
and the like, soon to be joined by civil rights leader Tunde Worthy
(Rumando Kelley) ...
I have to admit, even though Rhapsody in Justice has
its heart in exactly the right place, narratively it meanders a bit, often
trying more to hammer home its point than to tell an engaging story. That
said though, the film also has its segments of biting satire that one
can't but love, all carried by a very competent cast who play it straight
for maximum effect. So while the whole might be a little less than the sum
of its parts, it still comes up with a whole lot and certainly makes good,
supremely intelligent entertainment.
