Somewhere in the middle of nowhere, USA: A girl driver (Caitlin
Carmichael) asks a hitchhiker (Ryan Knudson) for directions, and then
decides to take him with her in her car on a whim. And the two sure make
an odd couple as the girl, probably not yet 20, looks too cute and
innocent to be true, while the hitchhiker looks like a vagabond who could
do with a wash. And so when they try to start a conversation to pass the
time, they at first fail to find common ground - but at the same time it's
quite clear that they have something in common. Thing is, there's a
serialkiller roaming the neighbourhood - or even more than one, and either
one or really everyone else could be it - and yet our girl driver takes
nothing but backroads to do her best to evade the police. Also, they seem
to leave a lot of dead bodies in their path. Things come a head when they
start having an argument, and the hitchhikier draws his life. But the girl
driver is more than capable to defend herself. All hell really breaks
loose when the local Sheriff (Warren Fast) and Deputy (Trenton Hudson)
finally catch up with them ... Horror veteran Danielle Harris plays a
lazy and annoyed waitress in this one. Now Roadkill is a
movie that saves up its surprises to the third act, beforehands its
surprises are fairly easy to predict - but that hardly matters in this
case as the film's basically a suspense piece, and anticipation and
suspense go well together. And a clever script and elegant direction as
well as plenty of violence in all the right places sure help to keep one
at the edge of one's seat, while the two protagonists play very well of
one another, portraying an odd couple sharing a unspoken secret and
develop a weird chemistry that really fits the story, making this pretty
cool genre entertainment.
