Father (Jörg Wischnauski) and daughter (Violetta Sangue) haven't seen
each other in years, and he has actually never been there for her, forcing
her to forge her own way, but it was their deceased wife/mother's last
wish that they would reconcile. So they decide on a weekend vacation in
the mountains to rekindle their relationship - which is easier said than
done, as dad has difficulties coming to terms with the fact that his
daughter has become a prostitute - and willingly, too - while the daughter
finds her dad's writings on male sexuality rather out-of-date. Enter a
hunter (Günther Brandl) who has lost his way and he asks for abode - and
rather unexpectedly he lifts the spirits of both father and daughter when
they sit together in the evening for a few drinks. The next day, all three
of them agree to go on a hike, but when the daughter trips over and asks
for a break, the men just leave her behind. This evening, the atmosphere
between the three is rather tense, and it doesn't get any better when dad
tells the hunter his daughter's a prostitute. The hunter offers the
daughter money for a night with him, and after she turns him down, he
decides to take what he wants, and maybe more - and that her dad is in the
room with them doesn't deter him one bit ...
Des Töchterleins Leid is certainly not an easy film to
stomach, and on one hand that's because at least some of the violence in
the rape scene in the finale is absolutely real - and even though things
only got real upon actress Violetta Sangue's express request - do watch
the short Emanzipation
und Müssiggang regarding the backgrounds concerning this decision
-, that scene is still anything but an easy watch. But what's really
disturbing about the film is its depiction of toxic masculinity, which is
portrayed in such an unemotional way it's only all the more shocking. Now
this all might not make this movie a crowdpleaser, but it's certainly a
film that will stay with you for quite a few days after watching - not
only because of its shock value but because it's also really well-made and
intelligently told - and that will have you thinking for sure.
