Your new movie Come
Back Mr. Bule - in a few words, what's it about?
It's about my return to Bali after a 12 year break.
What made you go to Bali to shoot a documentary exactly
when you did, and what can you tell ut about your love for the island to begin with?
The main reason was due to all the negative publicity it received in Australia due to the bombings, drug
busts and other incidents. I like Bali due to its relaxed lifestyle,
friendly people, warm climate and nice food. (Orher) sources of inspiration when dreaming up Come
Back Mr. Bule? Mainly the contradiction with
what the media was telling us. What can you tell us about your directorial approach to
your story at hand? Was more of a run and gun approach as we didn't know who we were
going to interview until we actually got there. You're also pretty much the host on
Come
Back Mr. Bule - so do talk about yourself in your movie for a
bit! Well I have been there many times
so it made sense for Come Back Mr. Bule to show the
place through my experiences and how I viewed the place. You of course also have to talkl about your buddy
on Come Back Mr. Bule,
Zew Howley - so what can you tell us about him, and about your collaboration?
Zev was a bit apprehensive due to media reports, but then I was able to use that in the film and he was okay
with doing that. We have known each other many years as he is also a
filmmaker. Originally he was just shooting it, but then I could see how I could
use his apprehension and concerns to build the story so he became a part of the story as well.
Do talk about the rest of your interviewees, and why esactly those? I tried to create different
viewpoints to contrast the story and show why people go to Bali. Australians
have a reputation of just going there to get cheap alcohol and get drunk,
which is really a very small part of the population. A few words
shooting on Bali as such, and about the challenges to shoot quite a way
away from home? Initially it was a nightmare with
visas etc but once we landed and obviously kept low key we had no issues
even though we were warned not to shoot over there without journalist
visas. Communication, heat and technical issues did slow us down a bit. I
actually flew back to Bali again and shot more footage as well. The $64-question, where can Come
Back Mr. Bule be seen? It has been in a few festivals
over the years and was recut a few years back as well. It will be playing
the end July at the Melbourne Documentary Film Festival with a documentary that
Zev made. Hopefully will get it onto a streaming site later in the year. Anything you can tell us
about audience and critical reception of Come Back Mr. Bule?
Won a few awards including best documentary and best direction.

Yes, a 16mm crime comedy short, another documentary about acting and a possible horror zombie comedy feature, finance permitting of course.
Your/yourmovie's website, social media, whatever else?

Anything else you''re dying to mention and I have merely forgotten to ask?
Took 3 years to complete this film and that's what you're probably
looking at when shooting a run-and-gun style documentary with no official script
or finance in another country.
Thanks for the interview! No worries.
