Twelve men and women (Lydia Hearst, Teala Dunn, James Crittenden,
André Tempfer, Ethan Ingle, Robert Picardo, Tabitha Jane, Cara Claymore,
Tim Realbuto, Mk McManus, Leon Andrew Joseph, Bai Ling) from all walks of
life and from all over the country are drugged, kidnapped and brought to a
remote island where they are forced by "the Judge" (Tony Todd(
to play Werewolf, actually a well-known and well-liked murder
mystery party game that eliminates two players per round until one
faction, either the "villagers" or the "werewolves",
reaches supremacy. Only our motley crew of strangers are to play it in
real time, and all the murders are actually real. And the island is well
guarded, so escape seems to be rather impossible. Of course, our heroes
and heroines could beat the system by collaborating and working
methodically. But a few too many alpha dogs among them as well as self
interests coming into play prevent them doing just that, and so what's
normally a beloved party game becomes a bloodbath ...
So ok, several aspects of this movie, from the premise to the
masks of the guards, are quite a bit of reminiscent of the popular South
Korean TV series Squid
Game, which premiered its second season only weeks before Werewolf
Game's release, but that out of the way, this movie is anything but a
carbon copy of the series and more of a pretty cruel psycho thriller
driven by well-fleshed out characters who are afforded engaging character
arcs and who are played by a capable and relatable cast. And the result is
basically pretty cool genre cinema.
