with Debra Lamb and the DeLorean

We've talked about this before, but do bring us up to speed: Your new movie There's No Such Thing as Zombies - in a few words, what is it about?

Basically it is a love story, imagine Chasing Amy with rotting flesh or Pretty in Pink with the living dead. It is a story of love lost then returned from the grave as a woman tries to find her feet in love while everyone else has theirs dropping off.

How did you get involved with the project in the first place, and what drew you to it?

I originally got involved as a replacement director for the short movie version, Talk of the Dead, then I got called back to film the feature version as we won a shedload of awards for the short. What drew me to it was the fact I got to play with a DeLorean - man, I mean wtfuuck cool! Also to work with Michael Haberfelner [Michael Haberfelner interview - click here] as his screenplays are such fun rather than the dark as fuck stuff I usually work with. He creates a more theatre-based screenplay scenario that is so well suited for the viewer enjoyment. It can also give me, the director, a better engagement with the actors on set as it is so cleverly dialogue-driven.

You were hired for the project (or at least its proof-of-concept short Talk of the Dead) on rather short notice - so how much of a challenge was that?

Working with everyone apart from Luana Ribeira [Luana Ribeira interview - click here] was a first time thing but a cool thing, I actually found the process easy as we had such an amazing cast and crew who worked faster than me, lol.

What can you tell us about There's No Such Thing as Zombies' writer/producer Michael Haberfelner, and what was your collaboration like?

Like I said earlier, Michael writes for film but it all but puts the audience on the stage, and that is a cool thing to do as he is one of the only modern film screenwriters to bring the Ealing Studios vibe to the 21st centuary

To what extent could you identify with There's No Such Thing as Zombies' brand of both humour and horror?

Yes very much so, I can identirfy this brand of horror/humour being a fan of Carry on Screaming, Dog Soldiers, Abigail, Shaun of the Dead, I absolutely love this vibe of film, it is timeless.

What can you tell us about your overall directorial approach to your story at hand?

My approach was very much keep a rolling set where we did not stopm and the cast was engaging non-stop with the natural flow of the film.

with Rachel Brownstein, Alexander Fernando, Lynn Lowry

Do talk about There's No Such Thing as Zombies's cast, and why exactly these people?

Why these actors - because they all worked, from Jim Byran's goofy zombie to Debra Lamb's [Debra Lamb interview - click here] bitter zombie catcher to the rookie Scott Hillier, the casting of the talent was merticulous and they worked so well. Each actor had to own there role like Lynn Lowry [Lynn Lowry interview - click here] owned the almost ultra cameo role as the rude CEO. This is what makes comedy work.

A few words about the shoot as such, and the on-set atmosphere?

Fun fun fun and non-stop, I hate breaks!

There's No Such Thing as Zombies in its current form premiered last year in Cannes - so how did that make you feel?

with Luana Ribeira and Michael Haberfelner at the Cannes premiere

Priveliged and humbled.

Anything you can tell us about audience and critical reception of There's No Such Thing as Zombies?

Every screening I have attended was heart warming. seeing the films fans lapping up our hard work

Any future projects you'd like to share?

Well, soon to start production (2025) is the crime thriller Deep Undercover, a film I will be directing and also wrote the screenplay for. I will be working alongside Michael (producer) and Luana (actress) again so I am very excited. Especially as Luana will be playing a very dark and serious character in this film. Also it will be great to have my polar opposite brother alongside me again, life sucks without my Austrian soul mate around my life.
