Julie's (Angelina Danielle Cama) almost 18 and only months away from
being released from foster care - and not one moment too soon it seems, as
she's regularly at odds with her foster parents Todd (Sean Whalen) and
Janelle (Maria Olsen) and regularly runs away. So much so in fact that
Rebecca (Kaiti Wallen), an over-ambitious but also overworked social
worker, takes special interest in her case. On one of her wanderings
through the woods, Julie stumbles upon a viking pendant that almost
magically draws her to a secret viking burial place, and she uncovers the
tomb of Frey (Yan Birch), who has been buried alive many centuries ago -
and who turns out to still be alive. Julie takes pity in Frey, hides him
in a shed and promises to feed him. However, whatever Julie tries to feed
him, he wants more - until he eventually kills a neighbouring couple at
their own farm. Julie's horrified by this, but she lets him drink from her
blood and he turns her into one of his kind in turn - which nobody seems
to much notice as all focus is on her problems at home and what she's to
do when having to move out. But then Julie's foster sisters (the
director's own daughters Hanna and Emilia Wallen) are killed by Frey, and
it becomes apparent for everyone that there's something evil lurking ...
A pretty unusual piece of horror as it focuses not so much on
the obvious threat, Frey, but instead digs deep into Julie's backstory -
which doesn't at all distract from the film's horrors though, but instead
gives the thing more depth. And thanks to a clever script and a genre
savvy yet subtle directorial effort the film remains highly engaging and
entertaining throughout, and is carried beautifully by a very solid cast,
making this a worthy genre treat.
