The title of this documentary could hardly have picked better, as Create
or Die is a documentary about the making of the movie Acorn,
with in turn is a movie about the making of a (fictional) movie by a
director (Morgan Shaley Renew) slowly dying from a brain tumor who wants
to make at least one meaningful movie in her life. And the making of Acorn
in many ways reflects what's going on in the film, from losing a main
location to the unexpected promotion of an actress (Caylin Brooke Sams) to
pretty much the sudden appearance of a certain (magical) tree ... ...
and all that said, Create or Die is more than just your typical
making-of feature, as it goes much more into the philosophy of low budget
filmmaking as such, and Acorn's
director David Axe in particular, who insists he's making one
"bad" movie a year to eventually be skilled enough to make a
good movie, and he, and many cast- and crewmembers give insight into the
creative process of making of a film that was done, out of necessity
rather than choice, on the cheap and that still might not make its money
back. Now of course, it will surely help to have seen Acorn
to really enjoy this one, but even without it's a fascinating documentary
for all who are into low budget cinema, and those who have actually been
on at least one indie film set will see at least some of their experience
mirrored in this film.
