Huxley College has found a new president in professor Wagstaff (Groucho Marx)
who has litle idea about running a college though & is thus quickly
persuaded by his son (Zeppo Marx) to invest his energy into the college's
football team, & even go so far as to hire 2 professional player from a
speakeasy, just to win a game agiants their rival Darwin College.
Unfortunately though gangster Jennings (David Landau) has beaten Wagstaf to
the punch & already hired the 2 players (Nat Pendleton, James Pierce) for
Darwin college, where huis money is at, & Wagstaff erroneously hires ice
delivery man Baravelli (Chico Marx) & dog catcher Pinky (Harpo Marx) for
his team.
Jennings though is still not confident enough that Darwin will win so he
sets Huxley's college Widow Connie (Thelma Todd) - who already has something
going on with Wagstaff's son - on Wagstaff to get him Huxley's football signals
...
Wagstaff in the meantime has realised that with Baravelli & Pinky he has
hired the wrong men & now tells them to abduct the real football players
(who are now in Darwin's employ), which of course ends in utter chaos, with
Baravelli & Pinky being locked up by the players themselves & almost
missing the game.
The game itself, almost lost by Huxley, soon turns into a chaotic event
itself with Huxley eventually emerging victorious.
The story of this movie, despite some interesting satirical aspects about colleges
& football, is simply put very bad, with most of its elements just too
silly to convince. However every time Groucho, Harpo & Chico step in to
dominate the scenery all this is quickly forgotten as wonderful comedy ensues
that just cannot be held down by stupid storylines.
