Mother Véronique (Valérie Bonneton) runs a small nunnery in a small
town, consisting of a mere three nuns (Camille Chaneoux, Claire Nadeau,
Guilaine Londez) and one trainee, Gwendoline (Louise Makek), with the
latter being a bit of a troublemaker due to her youth and
inexperience. And of course it was her idea to sign the nuns up for
a bicycle race for a cash price to use the money to support the local
grossly underfunded retirement home. Mother Véronique wants to drop out
immediately, but since the Father Abbott (Jean-Michel Lahmi) likes the
idea and promises her a trip to the Vatican should they win, she's swayed
and already makes plans about meeting the pope (Serge Peyrat). But there
are troubles aplenty, like a men's semi-pro team participating in the race
as well - something that's remedied by a car accident putting the whole
team out of action -, to Véronique being the only of the convent who has
any experience with bicycles, to Mother Joséphine (Sidse Babett Knudsen)
of the neighbouring convent participating in the race as well - and her
nuns are naturals when it comes to cycling. Now it has to be stressed here,
Mothers Véronique and Joséphine have been competing in anything and
everything ever since age seven, and neither are willing and able to grant
a triumph to the other. But with everything stacked against them, what
chances to Mother Véronique and her girls even have?
Now for the most part, Oh My Goodness! is perfectly
harmless, emits above all feelgood vibes, and basically plays it safe -
even if, while still happily, it doesn't end like one would expect it to.
But that's not to say that the film isn't still a totally enjoyable watch.
For one, the film's cleverly structured and peopled with colourful central
characters, then its punchlines are well-set and mostly genuinely funny,
and a beautiful yet tubtle directorial effort and a competent ensemble
cast also help making this a pretty entertaining piece of cinema. Oh
My Goodness! will be released to UK cinemas on March 14th, 2025.
