Nerdish Kamikawa, who likes to build bombs in his spare time, has
pretty much given up meeting the right woman and having sex ever, when
suddenly and out of the blue, an attractive Swedish girl, Ingrid
(Christina Lindberg) hops into his car at the airport parking lot and asks
him to drive on. You know, Ingrid is a carefree girl travelling the world
on her quest for freedom (whatever that means to her), and she has been
naive enough to have been persuaded by an international gang of
drugrunners to act as their courier, and in a case of mistaken identity,
she confuses Kamikawa for her contact in Japan. Since she doesn't speak
any Japanese and he doesn't speak any Swedish, there is of course no way
the two of them can clear up that mistake. Since he has no idea what the
girl might want from him, he takes her home and rapes her, and when she
puts up too much resistance, he ties her up and keeps her as his sex
slave. At first, Ingrid puts up resistance using everything she has got,
but soon her resistance crumbles, mainly because she tries to win his
trust to then make a getaway - and this works, too, and before you know
it, Ingrid is out of Kamikawa's apartment and out of his life, and his
attempts to find her and take her back add up to naught. Ingrid has
taken refuge in an underground music club - which was not such a good
idea, since apparently everyone in the club is a rapist, and she is soon
gangraped into a state of shock. Released after this experience, she
returns to Kamikawa, and boy has he changed since she has left him (less
than a day ago): He is no longer the kidnapper and rapist but now really
cares for her, and takes it upon himself to spend hour upon hour to
release her from her trauma ... and it works, too, and despite the fact
that they are still unable to understand each other's language, they
become lovers. Their relationship can't last forever though, as both the
drugrunners and the police have zeroed in on Ingrid, and once the
drugrunners have raided Kamikawa's place and clobbered both her and him
half senseless in the process, the police arrives to arrest everybody
except for Kamikawa - who just cannot let Ingrid go and thus he throws a
bomb to end everything ... I'm pretty sure my synopsis makes
this film exciting and interesting in a sleazy sort of way. However, the
film just isn't ... well, it's sleazy alright (though probably not as
sleazy as you might expect), but other than that it's disappointingly
bland. The problem is that the film totally lacks emotional depth, and its
characters though thrown into extreme situations remain completely bland
(despite a nice performance by Christina lindberg, I might want to add).
On top of that, the film at times seems unsure whether or not it should
play the whole thing for laughs - and here the problem is not so much that
kidnapping and rape are not exactly topics to make a good comedy about but
the simple fact that the film never really goes through with it and leaves
its plot in a weird limbo. To put it quite briefly, this film is a
terrible disappointment.
