At first, it seems that José (Brian Villalobos) has gone slightly off
the hook, what with him not sleeping for days and acting more and more
erratic - worrying enough for his wife Lucy (Lori Kovacevich) and his
sisters Vicky (Federica Estaba Rangel) and Sarah (Sarah Jack) to try an
intervention ... unsuccessfully so, as he's really just suffering from
insomnia. Thing is, soon more and more people in town are suffering from
insomnia as well, and they start to do crazy things, worst of all Sarah's
boyfriend Trent (Scotty Walker), who beats her up so badly that she makes
an escape to José's place where she ultimately dies. Eventually, it turns
out that the local water supply is polluted with meth, and it's not long
until all the bottled water in town is sold out. So José and Lucy team up
with Vicky and her girlfriend Lisa (Stephanie Slayton) to first try to
duck it through the water crisis with the little water they were able to
secure, and when that runs out they're looking for a watering hole in the
vicinity. Unfortunately, they aren't the only ones who've had that idea,
and some people use the water shortage for their own gain, and violently
so ...
An enjoyably weird little thriller that sure doesn't give its
game away too early and seems to change direction quite a few times while
spinning its yarn - which actually works quite well in the movie's context
as it adds layers and depth to the story. And a directorial effort that at
times is positively unnerving really serves the movie well, while a solid
ensemble cast manages to keep things relatable throughout despite the
rather unusual situations their characters get into. And all of this
results in pretty cool, decidedly non-mainstream genre entertainment.
