Germany 1944: Katherine LaRue (Suzy Alden) is a socialite and the
darling of the party scene - buit secretly she works together with Allied
spymaster Henry (Costas Mandylor), who provides her with vital information
to smuggle out of the country ... but she's captured near the frontline
and incarcerated in Colonel Stein's (Richard Lynton) makeshift prison
camp, to be shipped into the German heartland before too long - which
would be a disaster for the Allied Forces, so Major Murphy (Eric Supensky)
and his hastily thrown together ragtag team have to fly behind enemy lies
to hook up with a local resistance cell led by Gina (Allison Kessler) as
well as two recent refugees from the camp (Christopher Huff, Gus Zucco) to
try to spring Katherine fron the hands of the Germans ... which they
actually manage to do. But then they learn about the secret Katherine was
to deliver to their superiors, a shipment of heavy water for the
development of an atom bomb, which obviously would be a game changer. And
the shipment passes neat the camp in just a couple of days where it will
hit a vulnerable spot. And our heroes are the only ones who can
stop/destroy the train, even if it's a suicide mission ...
Now one thing up front, this film was quite obviously made on
a budget, so don't expect too much in terms of spectacle. That said,
there's still plenty of action in this one (as well as some welcomely
light moments amidst all the fighting), but it lacks the almost operatic
feel that one has come to expect from contemporary action blockbusters, is
more on the functional side. This though might work for the movie as it
concentrates more on its ensemble of characters, including some eccentric
ones, that are well fleshed out and given genuine arcs. And they're played
by a colourful cast who bring them to life quite convincingly, helping to
make this maybe not a masterpiece of genre cinema, but a very entertaining
war movie nevertheless.
