Many say that nowadays (as in the 2020s) we live in the golden age of
television, as streaming services left and right competing against one
another pretty much guarantees the production of high quality content
(amidst many flukes that is) - and while I'm not arguing with the
assumption as such, in quite a lot of ways the term "golden age"
belongs to an era much earlier in television, an era when TV has grown out
of its infancy and the relative stiffness of 1950s shows has been shaken -
by the likes of The
Dick Van Dyke Show, which premiered in 1961. Now even if it's
called timeless quite often, the show is very much a child of its time,
basically as comedy as such, and topical comedy at that, have changed
quite a bit in the 60 years since the show's launch, but even watching the
show of old now one can't deny the talent of all involved - and this
documentary does just that, celebrating the talent, not just of Dick Van
Dyke and regulars Mary Tyler Moore, Morey Amsterdam and Rose Marie, of the
show's creator Carl Reiner and showrunner Sheldon Leonard, but really of
the whole cast and crew (including guest stars), painting quite a
fascinating picture along the way with its combination of talking heads
footage and snippets from the show. And while one might argue the
documentary might be a bit too congratulatory in its approach ... but then
again, what did you expect from a movie called "Celebrating the 60th
Anniversary"? And that said, no matter how familiar you are with the
show as such, after watching this you'll very probably be tempted to try
your eyes on at least one episode on The
Dick Van Dyke Show - and frankly, it's worth it!
