The Manchu government burns the Shaolin temple to the grounds, and to catch Chen Kuan Tai, Shaolins
fiercest fighter, they enlits the help of Alexander Fu Sheng (as Fong
Chi Yu = Fong Sai Yuk), who indeed succeeds in catching him. But soon
afterwards, he learns that the Manchu have tricked him into fighting on
the wrong side, so he decides to free Chen Kuan Tai again, first by
fighting his way through the guards of the Manchu prison (where Chen Kuan Tai is
tied to
a wall), & when that doesn't work, by digging a tunnle directly to the
prison & freeing Chen Kuan Tai of his bonds. In the end, Fu Sheng &
Chen Kuan Tai fight the Manchu side by side.
No question, Chang Cheh was among the best Eastern-directors of his
time, & considering pure style & craftmanship, this movie does
prove just this. But apart form that, it has precious little to offer -
the story is pretty feeble (as you might have guessed when reading the
synopsis) & the characters (especially the 2 leads) are just plain
onedimensional at best, thus making this movie a rather bland (if
stylish) affair.
