Heidi (Christine Vrem-Ydstie) is a self-styled YouTube influencer,
letting her "fans" participate in every aspect of her life -
though it's mainly pretty much the same everyone else is doing, that means
alternative health advice, fitness and makeup advice, with a bit of
spirituality mixed in. And everything on Heidi's channel seems perfect -
only her life is anything but, she's in debt, she hates her job she never
even talks about in her videos, her relationship with Rian (Ryan Imhoff)
is less than perfect, and she doesn't always adhere to what she says on
her channel and isn't too crazy about all of her followers. So despite her
perfect facade she's just a person like everyone else. But then one night
she receives a visitation from another plane of existence, and from here
on she becomes confinced she's a channel to another world - and her
methods to spread the messages she receives from there at times border the
psychotic ... The influencer phenomenon sure is one that's not
always easy to understand, at least for someone of my generation (born in
the 1970s), but I Am a Channel seems to really nail the thing by
way of social commentary, portraying its lead character as pretty much a Jekyll
and Hyde-persona who pretty much seems to steer towards
breaking point since early on - and Christine Vrem-Ydstie really makes the
most of her role, being as likeable as can be on camera and very selfish
and manipulative when nobody's watching. But what makes this movie work is
that it doesn't go for full-blown comedy (despite the occasional
punchline) but puts everything in a dramatic context, ending with a rather
disturbing ritual. And as a whole, this is just one entertaining and
intelligent movie that most certainly deserves a watch.
