Hidden in barrels, the 4 Marx Brothers (Groucho, Harpo, Chico &
Zeppo) are crossing the ocean as stowaways. When they are found out
though, the usual chaos ensues, only augmented by the fact that
rivalling gangsters Briggs (Harry Woods) - travelling with his wife
(Thelma Todd) - & Helton (Rockcliffe Fellowes) - travelling with his
daughter Mary (Ruth Hall) - are on board too, & for some reason,
Groucho & Zeppo are hired as Briggs' bodyguards while Chico &
Harpo soon find employment from Helton. Btu the chaos really reaches its
climax, when the ship arrives in the USA & the only passport the 4
brothers have is the one of singer Maurice Chevaliler (not otherwise in
the movie), with each of them trying to prove to immigration he
is the famous singer. They get from board only eventually, taking
advantage of a fainted passenger. But the war of above mentioned
gangsters is not quite over as - at a party the Marx Brothers have
turned into turmoilt - Briggs kidnaps Mary, the girl Zeppo has fallen in
love with. In an absurd showdown at a barn, the Marx Brothers manage to
finally free her. One of the best Marx Brothers movies,
having found a nice balance between their usual nonsense, even surreal
gags & a fittingly uncomplicated story, rather than overemphasizing
on one on cost of the other. Both the usual love story (between Zeppo
& Ruth Hall, which is only hinted at) & the musical numbers
(reduced to Chico's piano-playing- & Harpo's harp-routine) are kept
to a minimum, giving the over the top comedy the room it needs to
unfold.
