Your new movie Cannibal
Comedian - in a few words, what's it about?
It is about an artist and cannibal murderer who really just wants to
pursue being a stand-up comedian. What were your sources of inspiration when writing Cannibal
Comedian? I am a stand-up comedy fan and have done stand-up. Comedians are a
different kind of animal; Jerry Seinfeld called comedians
"creatures". I remember stand-up being a brutal world,
cut-throat! Then hearing comic sayings like "I slaughtered the crowd
tonight," it sort of started developing from there. Do talk about Cannibal
Comedian's approach to both horror and comedy!
They go together like peas and carrots in my mind. A
few words about your directorial approach to your story at hand? I
wanted it to be grounded and create this bizarre world, sort of like Pee-wee's
Big Adventure. Once I had my theme and feel, it was easy to start to play
with the story, characters and situations. What
can you tell us about Cannibal
Comedian's key cast, and why exactly these people?
I have worked with most of the main cast for years. They bring a charm and weirdness I love.
Do talk about the shoot as such, and the on-set atmosphere! It was like a family on set. Shooting in the desert in this cabin we were
all forced to literally be really close. Anything
you can tell us about audience and critical reception of Cannibal
Comedian? We had a great festival run in which we won a lot of awards and really
got to get a feel from the people. So far they've been really eating it
up! Any future projects you'd like to share?
We are in post-production for my next feature, titled Area 5150. It's
like The Hill Has Eyes meets
Alien with some slapstick comedy. It
features Vernon Wells (Mad Max
2) and Felissa Rose (Sleepaway
Camp,
Terrifier 2). I have a script ready for another horror-comedy as well. What got you into filmmaking in the first place,
and did you receive any formal training on the subject?
Halloween and haunted houses as a kid. Then when I got my hands on a
camcorder at age of 10 I couldn't stop making movies. It always went
either full comedy or horror or both. What
can you tell us about your filmwork prior to Cannibal
Comedian? I made a 47-minute shlock, '80s-style slasher called Mangrove Slasher 2 -
and no, there wasn't a first one. That is available on Amazon Prime. The
next one was Big Top Evil, which features Bill Moseley (The Devil's
Rejects) that is available everywhere. So far, your movies have all been to
some degree of the horror variety - coincidence, or is that a genre at all
dear to you, and why (not)? Yeah, for now, haha. How would you describe
yourself as a director? I am just in my element when I direct and try to keep things simple. I
try to create a chill atmosphere on set and give actors a chance to
breathe and love coming up with new ideas to advance the scene. We are
all here to try to make the film better. Better ideas always win. Filmmakers who inspire you?
