It's not exactly known what it can do, but if the Spear of
Destiny is combined with the Eye of Horus, it's sure to spell
doom to humankind. Problem is, Neo Nazi cult leader Martel (David Brown)
has recently stolen the Spear of Destiny, so the British Secret Service
hires top archeologist Allan Quatermain (David Hardware) to both retrieve
the Spear and actually find the Eye of Horus, which has been hidden to
science for thousands of years. With the help of secret service agent
Darling (Eva Harding) and Brody (Ryan Flamson), a tourist who just
happened to tag along, Quatermain actually finds the Eye in a pharaoh's
tomb in Egypt - only to be tricked out of it by Martel and company, who
take Darling prisoner and leave him and Brody to die in the tomb which
they blow up. Of course, our heroes manage to free themselves and soon go
after Martel's group, who hide in a secret Nazi bunker in Argentina. Thing
is, their experiments focus around creating an army out of dead soldiers
for the Fourth Reich - and is Quatermain as good a zombie hunter as he is
an archeologist? Just like
Allan Quatermain was brought back to the big screen in a
couple of movies starring Richard Chamberlain in the mid 1980s after the
success of the first couple of Indiana Jones movies, Allan
Quatermain and the Spear of Destiny was quite obviously made to cash
in on Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny. And since the
Allan Quatermain of the books was a rather obvious inspiration
for Indiana Jones, such a cash-in seems only fair. But while
the Indiana Jones film came with a price tag of over $300
million, Allan Quatermain and the Spear of Destiny was made on a
much lower budget - which of course shows. But that's not to say Allan
Quatermain and the Spear of Destiny isn't a fun movie, despite its
shortcomings it manages to spin a James
Bond-ish spanning three continents, making up its lack of
full-blown spectacle with plenty of tongue-in-cheek humour, intentionally
silly dialogue and a slightly absurd yet very likeable storyline. And a
directorial effort bent on making the most of what it's got and rather
self-ironic, fun performances by all involved make this one heck of a fun
ride for sure.
