Natalie (Kyra Sedgwick) is a struggling artist in New York, so an offer
to do a photography job back in her hometown for a small fortune comes
like a God's send. .... until she learns that at that job she'd have to
work with her brother Roy (Kiefer Sutherland), a successful designer whom
she hasn't talked to in ten years, as their family was pretty much
shattered after their father (Chuck Shamata) had killed their mom (Berni
Stapleton). Now Natalie tries everything to get out of the job but can't -
also due to her agent (Stockard Channing) pretty much insisting. And Roy
really makes an effort to patch things up with her, even though he's too
much of a narcissist to succeed. So she's constantly wondering if she
shoult judt leave or scratch his eyes out first - and then he tells her
that he, who has been openly gay for years, is slowly dying from aids, and
has lost his partner to the disease a year ago. She's the only one he has
told, too, and despite all their quarrels in the past, she can't just let
him die. And seeing him at his worst, she slowly starts to remember what
Roy has been at his best ... A ratner heartfelt drama that
works quite so well because it doesn't try too hard to play the
audiences emotions but instead concentrates on telling a well-constructed
story while the directorial effort concentrates not only on the script as
such but also what happens between the lines. And of course, with
exceptional leads like Kyra Sedgqick and Kiefer Sutherland, who deliver
suitably subtle performances, you can't really go wrong. That said, you'll
probably still jerk the occasional tear, but at the same time this film is
also a very beautiful ride.
