Of late, Charli (Kate Lý Johnston), a young nurse by day, has found it
rather difficult to hold her life together, caught somewhere between drug
addiction and mental issues, mood swings and hallucinations, her roommate
Zee (Kylee Michael) whom she really loves, her sort-of boyfriend Kyle
(Irmon Hill) and Trevor (Quentin Boyer), a perverted doctor who uses her
addictions to treat her as his sex toy. And as much as she tries to keep
herself in line, things seem to spin out of control constantly, with drugs
the only thing that keep her from falling right off the wagon while at the
same time the very root of her problems - with every attempt to go clean
only ending in more disaster. Things go so far that Charli, usually with
Zee at her side, doesn't even shy away from crime anymore - but each crime
comes with its own repercussions ... It's probably unfair to
single out one single thing that really makes a movie, especially if it's
a good movie overall - but Kate Lý Johnston really makes this movie with
her very nuanced performance that despite all her outbreaks still makes
her character totally relatable throughout while making her descent
palpable. Having that said, she sure stands out but is by far not the only
good thing about the movie, there's also a script that manages to bring
across its point without ever preaching, a subtle directorial effort that
gives its cast the space to breathe, and a very solid ensemble supporting
Kate Lý Johnston's stellar performance. And the result of all this is
just a really worthwhile movie.
