Founded by Agnes Wilcox when she toured prisons with a theatre group
and learned about the desire of inmates to put up their own shows, Prison
Performing Arts is Missouri's oldest prison theatre arts program. Now
Mrs. Wilcox has since retired from the group, and this film follows
director Christopher Limber and playwright Stacie Lents as they're to put
up a show based on a group of female inmates of a prison in Vandalia,
Missouri based partly on their own experiences, and how they work on the
play on both the narrative and the performance side in a series of
interviews and acting exercises, up to the performance itself. Prison
Performing Arts - The Voice Within is quite an intimate documentary, one
that actually gives those usually marginalized a voice, lets them tell
their own stories unjudgmentally, but also shows the power of theatre, how
it changes the outlook of these ladies on their enviroment and on
life as such, gives them a different understanding of things. And it's
quite fascinating how this film documents that process pretty much step by
step.
