In a Christmas story told by Santa (Zombie Joe) himself, single mum
Diane (Rachel Alig) has to go to Hawaii for work for Christmas, and her 10
year old son Trevor's (Alex Lizzul) dad Ben (Danny Fehsenfeld) can't make
it to hers until a couple of days after her departure, so she has nobody
to look after Trevor. In her desperation, the calls her estranged and
washed up brother Nick (Chris Levine) to look after the boy - even if
suffering the hangover from hell and being a known Christmas hater, he
doesn't seem to be up for the job. But whatever's wrong with him, Nick's
heart is in the right place, and also despite having no experience with
children, Trevor quickly grows on him, so he tries his best to make the
few days worthwhile for the boy. However, good intentions don't always
lead to the best results, so over the course of the next few days, Nick
manages to get into a fight with a guy in a Santa costume (Devin Reeve),
manages to get Diane's Christmas tree stolen, manages to only find the
saddest of replacements for the tree, and he and Trevor manage to make a
mess of the kitchen. And that all's only for starters ...
With Christmas stories you pretty much know what you'll get: A
few too many Christmassy songs (you know the kind), an abundance of
Christmas decoration, some sort of message about the supposed true
meaning of Christmas, people wearing truly ugly Christmas sweaters,
and of course the obligatory happy ending - and Saint Nick has all
of that, some of it in droves. And yet, even if you're not into Christmas
movies. this film is actually pretty entertaining, for one probably
because it doesn't try to be wholesome, doesn't try to please everyone,
and every now and again goes for broard humour with even the occasional
swear word - and all of this makes the film much more relatable than the
usual genre fare, something that's also reflected in a grounded
ensemble cast playing down-to-earth characters with real world problems.
So all the genre mainstays aside, this is actually very likeable amd also
heart-felt comedy.
