Your new movie Feet
of Death - in a few words, what's it about?
A Bigfoot
thriller that is half monster film and half a whodunit mystery! Basic question, why Bigfoot?
Is that a creature or legend at all dear to you, and did you do any
research on the subject prior to writing? I was born and raised in the
Pacific North West, so Bigfoot
is everywhere up here. When I was thinking of writing a script that I could self-produce on a
micro budget, Bigfoot
just made sense. But I wanted to do
something different than your typical Bigfoot
film, which is why this is
just as much a mystery thriller as it is a monster movie. (Other)
sources of inspiration when writing Feet
of Death? I was always thinking about Jaws when writting, I didn't want to
show the monster right away. I wanted to hide it, make you think
maybe Bigfoot
isn't even real. What can you tell us about your
co-writers Ryan Stahl and Ashley Clark, and what was your collaboration
like? Ashley Chick is my wife of 16 years and has written multiple
books, so she is a huge help when I'm writing my scripts. Wheter it be
for dialouge or just bouncing off ideas she is super creative. And
Ryan Stahl is actually my brother-in-law and a gifted creative as well.
Fun fact, he actually scored the film as well! We have written 4
or 5 scripts together at this point. But we live 4 hours apart so
it is kind of a ping pong back and forth, never in the same room
togeter. Do talk about your movie's approach to horror! I am not a big fan of
slasher or demonic films. Honestly monster
movies are about the only horror films I enjoy. Which is why I made just
that! I love thrillers and mysterys, so I incorporated those
elements into this film as well.
A few words about your overall directorial approach to your story at hand? I am a very collaborative director. I want to hear what the
cast wants to bring to the table. If they have ideas I am all
ears. Now if the ideas contradict the story or things I have in mind, we
probably won't do them. But if they don't I usually have no problem
integrating them into the story. Example, Sherrif Ken wasn't going
to be wearing a cowboy hat originally, but the actor Jack Vanover brought
that idea to the table and I loved it! And I think that instantly tells
you about that character and makes him feel grounded. What
can you tell us about Feet
of Death's cast, and why exactly these people? All the cast and crew where locals from Oregon or Washingotn
State. We saw tons of self tapes and eventually chose our cast
because they were the best for the roles! And I think they killed it. You
of course also have to talk about the wonderful outdoors locations Feet
of Death was filmed at, and what was it like filming there? And
did you write the film with the locations already in mind? Since I was born and raised out here I knew we had to show off
the Pacific North West. Part of this was actually filmed on our land, we have 5 acres
out here. And yes, I definitely had a lot of these locations in mind
while I was writting. Do
talk about the shoot as such, and the on-set atmosphere!
Being on set is my favorite part of filmmaking. It is
collaborative, you are seeing your words come to life. I just just wish
I got to do it more! Anything
you can tell us about audience and critical reception of Feet
of Death? The major thing we are getting is the movie is different
than
expected. Which is exactly what I was going for. But, I know some
horror fans wish there was more action, blood and whatnot in the first
half of the film. Any future projects you'd like to
share? I have a few scripts already written, including another monster
film, an action film, and even a superhero X-Men like movie.
But... the one I am trying to do next is a sci-fi which is like a combination of Alien meets
Firefly! What got you into filmmaking in the first place,
and did you receive any formal training on the subject? I have been playing with cameras since I got my hands on my
dad's
VHS camera as a kid. When I went to college I actually went to
Oregon State University to be an engineer, but quickly decided that
wasn't for me and switched to Liberal Arts. That's where I really started
to learn more about production, editing, live news, and even VFX. What
can you tell us about your filmwork prior to Feet
of Death?
I have been working in film and TV since I graduated college back
in 2008. I have worked at multiple TV stations working on local
commercial, news, and promotions. Then I worked at a VFX house in
Portland Oregon doing a lot of creature work for shows like NBC's
Grimm. From there I started doing more independent projects. And now I run a
small production house doing everything from editing, VFX, sound desgin,
and film deliverables. How would you describe yourself as a
director? Excited, collaborative, and dedicated! Filmmakers who inspire you? Obviously
Spielberg has been an inspiration since I was a kid.
You just can't beat Jurrasic Park and Indiana Jones.
More recently I love everything Edgar Wright has done. I could list more, Sam
Hargrave, Lucas (I was a HUGE Star
Wars fan, kinda burnt these days), Robert Zemeckis, Ridley Scott, and even Michael Bay (he knows action!) Your
favourite movies? Jurassic Park, Gladiator, Back To The
Future, A Quiet Place, Star
Wars, Indiana Jones... ... and of course, films you really
deplore?

I am not a big HATER of movies. I know what it takes to pull off
even a bad movie, so I can respect most every film. Your/your movie's website, social media, whatever else?
www.ChickFlickFilms.com
Anything else you're dying to mention and
I have merely forgotten to ask? Please spread the word about
Feet
of Death. If everyone just told
a couple people about the movie or shared it to the social media
platforms that makes such a HUGE differnce for small indie films like
this one. Hope you enjoy! Thanks for the
interview!
