Your new movie It's Our Time - in a few words, what's it about, and what can you tell us about your character in it?

It's Our Time is a story of friendship and never giving up. My character Emilia is someone who's really tenacious and believes in her dream no matter what obstacles get in the way.

What did you draw upon to bring your character to life, and how much Tiana Hogben can we actually find in Emilia?

A lot of my mannerisms and little ways of speaking can be found in Emilia, mostly because we were allowed to improvise a lot. So you can definitely hear my rhythm in there. As for the character, we are pretty different! I'm a bit of a perfectionist so I'd never leave something like writing a funding application to the last minute.

How did you get involved with the project in the first place, what drew you to it?

The film's director Joy Hopwood [Joy Hopwood interview - click here] asked me to read for the part of Emilia after seeing my work in Thank God You're Here. I'd never shot a project in Sydney and it seemed like a very sweet story ,so I thought it'd be a really lovely project to be a part of.

Since It's Our Time is set in the filmworld, did you at all see your own experiences mirrored in the movie?

For me personally, no. But that's because I'm an actor and performer, not a filmmaker or producer. By the time I come on board for projects a lot of the stuff you see in the movie is already taken care of! But I'm very aware that it's not easy process - filmmaking is always hard not matter what level you're at.

What can you tell us about It's Our Time's director Joy Hopwood, and what was your collaboration like?

Joy is such a lovely person and she really did it all. She was always running around making sure every little bit of the movie was taken care of. She gave me a lot of freedom to use my background as an improviser, which I loved.

Do talk about the shoot as such, and the on-set atmosphere!

The on-set atmosphere was pretty hectic because we shot the movie so fast. There were points I didn't know what day it was! But everyone was incredibly lovely and everyone worked as a team to get the job done.

Any future projects you'd like to share?

I'm currently in Full Story, Troy Kinne's new pilot, which is out on YouTube.

What got you into acting in the first place, and did you receive any formal training on the subject?

I was a theatre kid in school so I've been performing since I was little. After I left school I went to TAFTA in Melbourne for a year and they taught me all about film acting. But it wasn't until I started training and then performing in improv at The Improv Conspiracy in Melbourne that I started to actually book roles, especially in comedy. Learning improv gave me so much freedom and confidence in my craft.

What can you tell us about your film- and TV-work prior to It's Our Time?

I've had lots of guest roles in Australian TV shows and webseries. But my biggest job in Australia would be doing Thank God You're Here as a series regular ensemble castmember. That job combined all the things I really love: improv, comedy and an aspect of live theatre.

Having worked on both self-contained movies and serialized TV, how do these sets compare, and which do you actually prefer?

They're both great! I probably prefer TV more if I'm a regular as you really do start to feel like home on set and it's just nice to know where things are and not have to ask people! And also have the familiarity of seeing some of your best friends each day. I do love films and short stints on sets too though because you meet some wonderful people.

How would you describe yourself as an actress, and some of your techniques to bring your characters to life?

I'm very natural, I tend to bring a lot of myself to characters, which definitely comes from doing a lot of improv. Most of the projects I'm in are comedy, but I do love doing drama too.

Actresses (and indeed actors) who inspire you?

Sandra Oh will always be one of my favourite actors. I'll watch anything she's in.

Your favourite movies?

This is always such a hard question to answer! I'm probably more of a TV person.

... and of course, films you really deplore?

I don't have films I really deplore,  if I don't really like something I probably won't finish it! Also with all films, it's taste-based and someone has put effort into making it. It's not easy so any film that gets made is a success in some way.

Your website, social media, whatever else?

I'm not very online, but I do have instagram (I don't post very much). That's @misstianah
