Somehow Stanley (Lou Costello), without even wanting it, convinces
greedy bitch Diana Emerson (Hillary Brooke) that he knows the whereabouts
of a diamond mine in deepest Africa, and before you know it, he and his
pal Buzz (Bud Abbott) jon her, her gang (Shemp Howard, Joe Besser, Max
Baer, Buddy Baer) and world renowned animal trainer Clyde Beatty (himself)
on an expedition into deepest, darkest Africa to find the diamonds - even
if Diana pretends she is only looking for some legendary giant orangutan.
Eventually of course, Stanley and Buzz mess up everything royally, run
into a variety of wild beasts, famous big game hunter Frank Buck (also
himself), cannibals, and of course the giant orangutan (Charles Gemora),
who has taken a liking to Stanley. And in the end the baddies get their
just desserts while Stanley gets the diamonds ...
So-so Abbott & Costello-comedy that has some amusing scenes on one
hand, on the other sometimes one just gets the feeling they don't even try
hard enough: when they play the exact same extended joke on first Clyde
Beatty and later Frank Buck, this isn't exactly evidence for inventiveness
... especially since the joke isn't all that good. In all very mediocre.
Three Stooges fans will want to see this movie anyhow
because both Shemp Howard and Joe Besser (both Stooges, but
never at the same time) are in it, however, of the two only Howard has
some really funny scenes.
