Back when she was a girl, Clive (Mia Akemi Brown) crossed paths with a
very human looking alien, Mann (Michael Esparza), who gave her a rock he
called his failsafe for safekeeping before being apprehended by the
authorities. It's 25 years later, and Clive (now played by Carie Kawa) is
something of a failed photographer now who desperately tries to get her
family motel in the desert up and running again as an artists' retreat
with her husband Mitch (Daniel Dorr), who's more interested in painting
though, and her mother Carlene (Cynthia Mace), who does little other than
complain about all things big and small though. And then, out of nowhere
Mann shows up again, not a day older, and he asks Clive to return the
failsafe. And Clive would be happy to do so, but unfortunately she has
buried the thing in the desert as a kid, and now can't find it anymore.
Soon enough, another man shows up at the motel, Sam (Gregory Jbara), an ex
gouvernment agent who has since changed sides and has helped Mann escape
from the research facility. He only emphasizes how important it is for
Mann to get back his failsafe - but helping Mann getting back the rock
slowly erodes the life she had been living ... A quite unusual
movie as it takes a very science fiction premise to basically make it into
anything but, rather a film about self-discovery and soul-searching with
philosophical undertones and a focus on characters and their arcs. But if
all that sounds a bit heavy, the film's rather light-footedly directed,
moves along at a swift pace and is rather beautifully shot. And of course,
a very solid cast also goes a long way to make this one really
watch-worthy movie.
