Massimo (Michael Klug) and Tien (Christine Nguyen) have been such a
happy couple ... until he introduces her to his mum (Debra Lamb) and his
stepdad (Joe Altieri), who for some reason don't take kindly to her - so
much so that his stepdad tells him to break up with her. Now Massimo is a
grown man and shoudln't take orders from someone who isn't even his real
father, but then again stepdad is the local crime kingpin, and Massimo
makes a good living being essentially his glorified runner. But before he
can break up with Tien, he receives a visit from a mysterious woman, Sofia
(Meghan Deanna Smith), who bites him in the neck and ... essentially makes
him a vampire. This (naturally) blows Massimo's mind and also makes him
mighty jumpy, and Sofia, who's apparently a shapeshifter, doesn't make
things any easier. But on the other hand, she also helps Massimo feed,
luring a prostitute (Helene Udy) into his lair, and killing her when he
proves too much of a good guy to do it. But while being a vampire, Massimo
also has to still function in "real" life, and to keep him in
line his stepdad has even provided him with a handler (Mike Ferguson). But
with his newfound powers, Massimo grows more and more cocky ... On
the surface, a mix of vampire and gangster movie, this is upon closer
inspection much more of a character piece - but not in the boring way the
term might suggest, but done in a very trippy manner that is at the same
time introspective as it's just genuinely creepy, and that still follows
the rules of suspense filmmaking. Then add to that some creative
directorial choices that mix up monochrome with colour bits and crazy
clips from vintage movies, and a very down-to-earth ensemble cast that
keeps things grounded, and you have yourself a welcomely unusual film, and
great genre entertainment for sure.
