One night, Darren, who runs a true crime podcast, reveives a call from
a man, Jeff, who claims he is an actual serialkiller and who wants to go
on air in Darren's show to talk about his motives, his work and his modus
operandi. And while there's absolutely no evidence that Jeff's the real
deal, Darren takes him on and he and his producer Robin try to keep him on
the air as long as possible, learning about his early days, that he has
killed 12 women in 27 years, that he targets exclusively prostitutes, that
he sometimes lets girls go when their stories resonate with him, and how
that gives him power over life and death. And while the three of them
talk, their technician Beth does her best to reach the FBI to not only see
if Jeff's for real but also drop off maybe valuable clues. Late in the
conversation, Jeff drops a bombshell, he has buried a woman alive, with
oxygen for about 15 hours, so she might yet be saved - but she needs to be
found first ...
Based on a real life call on Howard Stern's radio show by a
"searialkiller" (who might or might not have been the real
deal), this is a very tense little thriller that pulls all the stops even
if it hardly ever leaves the radio studio and mostly shows people talking
on the phone. But a clever and cleverly structured screenplay as well as a
direction that's as dynamic as the restrictions allow create plenty of
suspense nevertheless while the performances are all spot on. As a result,
this is a thriller that's more effective than it has any right to be and
definitely a worthwhile watch.
