These days, Alex (Nathan Shepka), formerly an elite soldier, works as a
bouncer for a nondescript night club - a rather dull job, but that's quite
ok to him, having seen too much bloodshed during his active days of duty.
Then though his lawyer friend Evan (Sylvester McCoy) makes him an offer he
can't refuse (also financially), to get a young girl back from a sex
trafficking ring, no matter what cost. And the cost is to be high,
especially when he finds his girlfriend (Grace Cordell), however
involuntarily, being involved with the organisation as well ...
Now I won't say for a minute that Dead Before They Wake
is re-inventing the wheel, as in its heart, this is just another action
thriller based on a tried-and-true storyline. But that's not to say that Dead
Before They Wake isn't also very good at what it is, a hard-hitting
piece of genre entertainment that for once is actually based on a
relatable premise, and that despite all the action and violence is carried
by well fleshed-out characters that are afforded their individual arcs.
And add to that the fact that the movie's still decently paced and most
certainly doesn't lack in punch, and you've got yourself pretty cool genre
cinema.
