England, the 1700s: Masked highwayman Dick Turpin (Tom Mix) terrorizes
the countryside, holding up coaches and relieving rich folks of their
money - but he has a heart of gold and gives to the poor, which makes him
a champion with the common folks. One day he holds up the coach of Lord
Churlton (Philo McCullough), and finds in his possessions a locket with
the picture of Lady Alice (Kathleen Myers), the woman Churlton is to marry
- and Turpin falls in love on the spot. Later that day, he, out of his
highwayman costume, saves Lady Alice's coach from - oh the irony - two
highwaymen. Since the highwaymen killed her coachman he offers to drive
the Lady to her destination and that way learns that she doesn't really
want to marry Churlton. They make a plan for her escape - which is almost
foiled when Churlton can identify Alice's coachman as Dick Turpin. Dick
manages to go into hiding in London, but all exits of the city are blocked
off. But with the help of his firend, fellow highwayman Tom King (Alan
Hale), he manages to trade places with a prizefighter (Bull Montana) and
this way fool the authorities. However, eventually both Dick and Alice are
captured, and while she's to be forced to marry Churlton it's the gallows
for Dick. But of course - again with the help of Tom - he makes a daring
escape, and ultimately everything ends well for the lovers. Even
if not on par with the more refined swashbucklers of its era starring
Douglas Fairbanks and the like, this is a very lively little adventure
film with cowboy superstar relocating to 18th century England for a
change. Sure, his attitude's a bit too gung-ho for a swashbuckler, and
romantic scenes are clearly not Mix's forte, but in all the film moves
along at a brisk pace - not at all unlike Mix's best westerns would. No
masterpiece perhaps but a fun ride for sure!
